LVB Feasibility Studies

As sea level is expected to increase by as much as 1.0 meters due to climate change, so will its associated negative effects like erosion and flooding. In Ghana’s four coastal regions, the Volta region has the highest overall climate risk. It is frequently battered by ferocious surge of sea waves, wiping coastal infrastructure including homes, schools and roads; threatening livelihood opportunities and the safety of many coastal communities It is in the light of these challenges that the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), in partnership with the West Africa Coastal Areas Management Programme (WACA) of the World Bank, has engaged Hohai University, China (lead consultant) and the Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience (ACECoR) at University of Cape Coast, Ghana (partner consultant), to undertake comprehensive feasibility study of the Lower Volta Basin (LVB) to address coastal erosion and enhance flood risk mitigation. The project aims to support the broader objectives of the WACA Resilience Investment Project (ResIP 2) by providing critical data to inform the design and implementation of nature-based, grey and hybrid interventions to protect and restore ecological, social and economic assets of coastal communities.
